Theme: Religion, Immigrants and Health: Assessing Challenges to the Way
Forward in a Modern World

As immigrants migrate to industrialized worlds, they are confronted by
numerous challenges. African, Middle Eastern and Asian immigrants are
noted to be confronted with the challenge of female genital cutting also
known as female genital mutilation or female circumcision, amongst a
host of social issues. Some have turned to religion for recourse. What
policy issues do they confront? What cultural, political and religious
factors are involved? Conveners would like to invite scholars,
researchers, academics, students and leaders from around the world to
gather for an informative discussion of this important issue. This
Interdisciplinary International Conference (IIC) seeks to highlight
variable that inform this social issue.

Organized and hosted by the Religious Studies Program, and other
affiliate multidisciplinary programs at East Carolina University, The
first Interdisciplinary International Conference will be held in
September 27 – 29, 2013 at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC,
27858.

The focus of the conference is to draw attention on the role of the
humanities and social science in health care and general development.
Papers are invited from experienced scholars and researchers as well as
graduate students. The conference organizers will also accept relevant
panels, and poster sessions. Select papers will be published as
proceedings.

Conference papers should fall within the following sub-themes:

7. Politics and Health Policies
8. Health and Human Rights
9. Clerics speak on immigrants health
10. Multiculturalism and human rights

Abstract Submission:
Submit your abstract to the convening committee by March 15, 2013.
Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and should be in the following
format: 12 point Times New Roman, Single Spaced in APA referencing
style. Top, bottom, left and right margins should be one (1) inch each.
Soft copy should be saved as a word file (Ms Word 2003 format or Rich
Text Format). The abstract should include full contact details (title,
name, address, email-address, and telephone) as well as institutional
affiliation. Papers presented at the conference will be published in
edited volumes.
