The Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto invites applications for a five year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the field of Christianity. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing on July 1, 2017 and ending on June 30, 2022.

Candidates must have earned a PhD in Religion or in closely related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a record of excellence in research and excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. Excellence in teaching can be demonstrated by strong letters of reference, breadth of training, demonstrated competence in method and theory in the study of religion, and the ability to teach a variety of courses in the area of Christianity, from an introductory undergraduate survey, to more specialized undergraduate courses and as appropriate, graduate courses. Areas of teaching may include: topics in mediaeval and early modern Christianities; heresies and deviance; Christianities in North America; Christianity, colonialism and decolonization; Gender, sexuality, and Politics; and/or material culture and public memory. Excellence in research can be demonstrated by the completion of a first-rate doctoral dissertation, publications, output of research or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, participation in scholarly conferences appropriate to the candidate’s areas of specialization, as well as strong reference letters from referees of high standing. The candidate’s research may focus on any area of Christianity, but competences that complement the existing departmental strengths will be an asset.
