Are you curious about the relationships between religious and spiritual phenomena and a region’s distinctive historical, cultural, natural, and political characteristics? Would you like to be integrally involved in an innovative research project at the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at the University of Victoria?
Context: This SSHRC-funded project will allow a group of scholars to study the peculiar context of religion/spirituality in the Pacific Northwest (or “Cascadia”). The project will include a survey, focus groups, interviews, and some text and archive work. We are interested in why the region seems to be empirically distinctive; the impact of post-religious environmental philosophies on the shape of religious and spiritual (and post-religious/spiritual) groups and movements; differences between Cascadia north (Canada) and south (US); the implications of rapid secularization for the provision of social services in the region; and the extent to which religiously committed individuals experience the region as inclusive.
Research team: Paul Bramadat (CSRS, UVic) is the Principal Investigator, Lynne Marks (History, UVic), Michael Wilkinson (Sociology, TWU), and Sarah Wilkins-Laflamme (Sociology, University of Waterloo) are the Co-investigators. In addition, there are approximately eight Collaborators from universities in Canada and the United States. We will also hire graduate students to support the project.
Tasks: The post-doctoral fellow will work with the research team to coordinate the project. He or she will participate actively in the qualitative aspects of the research and will be involved in all elements of dissemination, including writing or co-writing chapters, editing, presenting, and so forth.
Qualifications: The candidate should have completed his or her PhD (or be ABD) or at least an MA (with additional relevant job experience). The subject and approach of the candidate’s academic work may vary, but the candidate should have experience working with human subjects and dealing explicitly with religious/spiritual phenomena.
Salary: about $40,000; also, a private office, access to all CSRS activities, opportunities to lecture at the CSRS, and (perhaps) teach in the Religious Studies program.
Duration: 2 years (starting sometime between July and September 2017), but there would
be a possible renewal for another two years. The colleague would not need to be on site for the entire time, but the CSRS would be her or his primary base.
Applications: please send a cover letter, CV, and two letters of recommendation, to CSRS@uvic.ca. We will continue to receive applications until we have found a suitable candidate, but we hope to conclude this search by the end of June.
For additional information about this opportunity, please contact Paul Bramadat, Professor and Director of the CSRS, at bramadat@uvic.ca or 250-721-6324.
