Department for the Study of Religion Tenure-Track Position in the Study of Religion
The Department for the Study of Religion at Saint Mary’s University [SMU] invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, focusing on “Religion, Politics and Power”. This call specifically invites those candidates whose research and writing reflects on contemporary global issues, with a focus on one of the following (not in order of priority): 1) gender and religion; 2) religion and development; 3) religion and the environment; 3) religion and violence; or 4) religion and popular culture as it relates power and identity.
Applicants should clearly articulate in their cover letter how their research and teaching fits into the positions focus on Religion, Politics and Power, and situate themselves within the sub- categories outlined above. They should also present a teaching portfolio demonstrating the ability to teach introductory and senior/graduate level courses in the Study of Religion, including courses in method and theory. The successful candidate must be able to supervise honours and MA students in research. It is important that the position in Religion, Politics and Power be filled by a scholar with a completed PhD in the discipline of the Study of Religion. ABD candidates will be considered with reasonable assurance of completion before the commencement of the appointment on July 1, 2023.
The Department for the Study of Religion provides BA honours, major, minor, and concentration programs, and in conjunction with Atlantic School of Theology conducts an innovative MA program in Theology and Religion. The Department also supports and has faculty who are cross- listed to interdisciplinary programs, such as Atlantic Canada Studies, Environmental Studies, Women & Gender Studies, Asian Studies and Global Development Studies.
