This position has a term length of 8 months. Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.
Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

Working for the Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and most diverse faculty on campus and is one of the largest research and teaching centres in Western Canada. The Department of History, Classics, and Religion offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in Classics (including Classical Archaeology), Religious Studies, and History. Classics is the interdisciplinary study of the ancient cultures and civilizations of the Mediterranean world, particularly those of Greece and Rome. History is the study of change over time within and across human societies, from any period and any part of the world. Religious Studies is the critical study of religious beliefs, practices, texts, institutions, and communities. Our courses and degrees help students develop their abilities in critical analysis, creative thinking, and effective oral and written communication. Our award-winning instructors and researchers teach nearly 9000 students in about 200 classes per year. The Department of History, Classics, and Religion has a long record of research and teaching excellence on the history of Indigenous peoples.
Position
The Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta invites applications for an Academic Teaching Staff member (rank TBD) in Religious Studies, specializing in one or more non-Western religious traditions. This is an eight-month full-time position starting September 1, 2024, with a teaching load of three courses per semester.
Responsibilities for the position include:
- Teaching three undergraduate courses per semester. Subject to confirmation, the teaching assignment is likely to include junior survey courses on Eastern religions, an Introduction to Buddhism, and an Introduction to Hinduism.
- Service responsibilities directly related to the teaching assignment (student advising, office hours) and participation in department meetings.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD in Religious Studies or a related discipline, or be ABD with a firm expectation of completing the PhD before August 1, 2024. Demonstrated potential for effective university teaching is a requirement for the position.
