Call for Papers

The Religion & American Law Discussion Group, under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan College, is soliciting paper proposals for its second annual meeting, to be held concurrently with the American Academy of Religion annual meeting (November 21-24, 2015) in Atlanta, Georgia. [Exact date TBA.]

Proposals are requested on the following topics:
1) Holt v. Hobbs (2015), or topics related to RLUIPA;
2) Religious accommodations, be they in the workplace (in light of EEOC v. Abercrombie &
Fitch) or in the provision of services (in anticipation of challenges to Obergefell v.
Hodges);
3) Other topics related to current issues of religion and American law (federal, state, or
municipal): Reed v. Town of Gilbert, AZ (as it pertains to religious speech); Zivotovsky v. Kerry (as it pertains to American Judaism, Zionism, and US foreign policy); and others.

Proposals should not exceed 500 words, should suggest scholarly analysis rather than reportage, and must include the author’s name and institutional affiliation.

Proposals are welcome from all academic disciplines, as well as practitioners who work in fields related to the intersection of religion and American law, including those affiliated with advocacy groups (religious or secular) and municipal, state, or federal government offices (in the executive, judicial, or legislative branches).
