2026 Annual Meeting

The Canadian Society for the Study of Religion/Canadienne pour l’Étude de la Religion (CSSR/SCÉR) 2026 Annual Meeting will be held at St. John’s College, University of Manitoba, from Saturday, May 30 to Monday, June 1, 2026.

This year, CSSR/SCÉR is holding its annual meeting outside of Congress and in conjunction with the Canadian-American Theological Association (CATA), Canadian Society of Church History (CSCH), and the Canadian Theological Society (CTS).

This year’s theme, Common Places, Contested Spaces: Religion in Canada and Beyond, invites participants to reflect on how place and context shape religious traditions and the study of religion more broadly.

Conference Program and Events

A draft of the conference program is now available. The program is updated on a weekly basis. Latest update: March 14, 2026.

We will be hosting two main events that are free for all registered members:

  • CSSR Social with Refreshments (Saturday)

  • President’s reception (Sunday)

Conference Registration

The conference registration deadline May 15, 2026.  This link is for all societies and participants to register.

The registration fee is a flat rate of $100 CAD, which includes lunch as well as tea and coffee service.

CSSR Membership

All participants and attendees must be current, paid members of CSSR. Memberships run from January 2026 through December 2026.

If you have not yet joined or renewed your membership for the year, you may do so.

Accommodations

Dorm accommodations will be available at St. John’s College.

Members can indicate their interest by selecting the dorm option on the conference registration form.

We expect to know by April 1, 2026 how many rooms are available, and those who selected this option will be contacted to register on a first-come, first-served basis.

Some nearby hotel options at a range of price points include:

  • The Queen Bee Hotel

  • The Four Points Sheraton

  • The Comfort Inn South

Volunteers Needed!

  • We are seeking 1–2 volunteers to assist with conference registration. This role will primarily involve handing out nametags and conference packets during the morning registration period each day, as well as serving as a point person for late arrivals once registration closes.

Student members are especially encouraged to volunteer. This is a great opportunity to help support the conference and meet fellow participants.

  • We are still seeking volunteers to chair several conference sessions. If you are willing to serve as a session chair for panels that do not yet have one listed in the draft program, we would greatly appreciate your help. Session chairs introduce presenters, help keep time, and facilitate brief discussion.

If you would like to get involved, please email our program chairs.

Accessibility and AV Needs

If participants have accessibility needs or require audiovisual support beyond standard projection, please notify our program chairs in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements.
