Social Theory and the Ancient World

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the area of Social Theory and the Ancient World beginning August 2015. At the time of hire, a Ph.D. in the academic study of religion or relevant related area is required. The position is a full-time appointment in Religious Studies. Specific areas of publication and teaching are open, though they will have as their focus the academic study of the so-called “ancient world” (broadly conceived historically and geographically). An emphasis in exegetical and/or historical scholarship alone, however, is not sufficient to fulfill the needs of the position. The successful candidate will combine historical and language expertise with modern social theory, thereby using their object of study as an example of wider, cross-cultural social forces and issues. Engagement with issues of methodology in the academic study of religion is also welcome. Applicants should demonstrate an active and ongoing research agenda, a record of teaching excellence, and the ability to contribute to the life of an academic department in the areas of service and citizenship. All faculty in REL contribute to teaching introductory courses as well as more specialized upper-level seminars.
