Assistant Professor in Asian Religions
The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in Asian Religions. The committee especially welcomes applicants with research and teaching interests in gender, the body, affect, ritual, women’s studies, and/or queer theory. Religion(s) and region(s) of specialization are open (e.g., Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism; West Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, East Asia). Recent PhD recipients are encouraged to apply.
The University of Pennsylvania is a private research university located in Philadelphia. The successful candidate for this new faculty position should have a compelling and original research agenda and a commitment to pursue it within the interdisciplinary framework offered by the Department of Religious Studies, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the wider University. The department has special strengths in material religion, visual culture, manuscript studies, interreligious contacts, and cultural history. The university’s resources for the study of Asian religions include the Department of South Asia Studies, Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, South Asia Center, Middle East Center, Penn Museum, and Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books, and Manuscripts.
A normal teaching load is 4 courses per year on a semester system. The successful candidate will participate in the department’s undergraduate teaching mission as well as graduate teaching and training in the PhD program in Religious Studies.
