Liberal Studies (Religious Studies/South Asian Religions), Tenure-Track Assistant Professor.
The Religious Studies Program is housed in the Liberal Studies department within the innovative Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies, the heart of Grand Valley State University’s nationally recognized liberal education initiative. The Liberal Studies, Religious Studies, and Intercultural Training Certificate (ITC) Programs all reside in the Liberal Studies Department. Religious Studies offers a BA and BS degree and a minor. Liberal Studies offers both a BA and a BS degree. Faculty teach six courses per year; course loads reflect both individual expertise and the needs of Religious Studies and Liberal Studies. Courses taught may include:
Religions of the World (REL 100), Introduction to Religious Studies (REL 200), Contemporary Theories and Issues in Religious Studies (REL 300), Religious Studies Senior Seminar (REL 495), Visionary Thinkers (LIB 401), Introduction to Liberal Education (LIB 100) or Diversity in the United States (LIB 201), and other courses as needed. Service to the program, department, college, university and larger community is also required.
Required Qualifications and Education:
• Expertise in South Asian Religions and in the interdisciplinary Study of Religion. The committee welcomes applications across a broad range of topics within the study of South Asian Religions, including but not limited to peace and conflict studies, gender, sexuality, globalization, the body, healing, material culture, or religions in the Americas.
• Demonstrated teaching experience in the following areas: interdisciplinary Study of Religion; South Asian Religions; religious diversity.
• Successful research program within the interdisciplinary Study of Religion.
• Academic leadership skills that will serve our newly developing program.
• Ability to contribute to both the Religious Studies Program and the Liberal Studies Department.
• PhD in hand at the time of application.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
• Experience in engaged pedagogy
• Experience teaching collaboration, integration, diversity and problem solving
• Experience with liberal education and integrative learning
• Experience with interdisciplinary collaborative research
Salary is commensurate with skills and experience.
