PhD studentship (2016-2019) in atheism, nonreligion, and secularity — Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University Belfast and Aarhus University

 In Graduate Students, Uncategorized

Hi all,

I’d like to announce the availability of a PhD studentship (2016-2019) for those interested in studying atheism, nonreligion, secularity (etc.) from a cognitive perspective.

This studentship is for a joint PhD in the Cognitive Science of Religion, offered by the Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University Belfast in cooperation with Aarhus University, two key institutions in the growing field of CSR and in looking at atheism and nonreligion with the tools of the cognitive and evolutionary sciences.

The studentship would cover all fees and a maintenance grant for UK residents and fees-only for non-UK but EU residents. Unfortunately, the studentship is not available to non-EU residents.

The application deadline is 29 April, 2016.

Please see the attached announcement for more details (click to download)

I will say that we are quite pleased with this programme to this point (it began in 2014), as our first studentship recipient, Hugh Turpin, is doing great work looking at cognitive and social components of apostasy in the Republic of Ireland in the wake of the clerical abuse scandals and has already presented his initial results at the IAPR in Istanbul this past summer.

Further, in light of the John Templeton Foundation’s recent funding of an initial project on the Scientific Study of Nonreligious Belief, with Lois Lee, Stephen Bullivant, and myself as PI’s, the successful applicant for this studentship will have the opportunity to be involved with a range of collaborators (national and international) on projects currently in development.

So we see this as a great opportunity!

Please feel free to message me or my colleague at the Institute of Cognition and Culture, Dr. Paulo Sousa (paulo.sousa@qub.ac.uk) if you have any questions.

Best,
Jon
