The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Early Christian History and Literature to commence July 1, 2017. The successful candidate will be required to teach Early Christianity at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and should demonstrate outstanding teaching and research skills and potential for outstanding teaching. We especially welcome candidates who possess additional expertise in post-apostolic history and literature, which could include specialization in Early Church History, Patristics/Late Antiquity, Gnosticism, Syriac Christianity, or related area and the language(s) pertinent to these areas (e.g., Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic). Engagement with diverse approaches (e.g. feminist, social scientific, social historical, archaeological) is also welcomed.
The successful candidate must have completed a PhD prior to taking up the position, and will be expected to maintain an active program of research, graduate and undergraduate teaching, graduate supervision, and departmental service, events, and initiatives.

The application dossier should include: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and a sample chapter or scholarly paper (maximum 25 pages). Candidates should submit a brief encapsulation of their teaching philosophy, an account of their present and anticipated research profile, and a statement (1 page max.) identifying their contributions (or potential contributions) to diversity, along with their ability to work with a culturally international student body. In addition, applicants should arrange to have three confidential letters of recommendation sent separately by their referees. Shortlisted applicants will be asked for a teaching dossier.

The anticipated start date of employment is July 1, 2017. This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
