Junior Professor in Arabic Studies — The University of Bayreuth
The University of Bayreuth is advertising a Junior Professor in Arabic Studies, with a core focus on the Arabic Language and its written or oral manifestations in Africa.
The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Languages & Literature at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a Junior Professor of Arabic Studies (pay grade: W1) to commence 1 October 2016. This is a fixed-term civil service position.
The postholder will represent the discipline of Arabic Studies in research and teaching. His or her core area must be the Arabic Language and its written or oral manifestations in Africa, preferably in or south of the Sahara. Applicants may have a profile in either linguistics or literary studies. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the history of Arabic and Arabic National Grammar as well as knowledge of either Arabic dialects or Arabic literature in or south of the Sahara.
The successful candidate will be active in the University of Bayreuth’s core research areas, particularly in the field of African Studies. He or she will be expected to collaborate with the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) and researchers in neighbouring academic disciplines, most notably Islamic Studies.
The incumbent will offer courses in the BA programme “Culture & Society”, the minor in “Studies in Arabic and Islamic Language and Culture”, the MA programme “Language– Interaction–Culture”, and the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS).
In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are (in accordance with Articles 14 and 15 BayHSchPG) a university degree, a doctoral degree, and proven excellence in teaching. If the candidate was employed as a graduate assistant or research associate prior to or subsequent to earning his or her doctor- ate, the total duration of the doctoral research phase and the employment phase must not exceed six years. The incumbent is expected to be able to teach in English and – to the extent that he or she is not conversant in German – to acquire a working knowledge of German within two years.
The successful candidate will initially be hired as a civil servant for a period of three years. If the junior professor agrees, he or she may be extended for up to three additional years upon successful evaluation in the course of the third year of employment. In accordance with § 4 para 1 number 3 of the Teaching Assignment Ordinance (Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung), the teaching load is currently set at 5 hours of instruction in the first phase and 7 hours of instruction in the second phase.
