Second Call – 2019 International Conference on Religion & Film (ICRF) in Halifax with travel support

 In All, Call for Papers

Saint Mary’s University and The Journal of Religion & Film and are pleased to co-sponsor the 2019 International Conference on Religion & Film (ICRF) in Halifax NS. Halifax occupies a unique place in Canadian history as a point of ingress for settlers, entry for immigrants, refuge for loyalist Blacks, exile for Maroons, and continues to be the unceded territories of the Mi’kmaw. Its rich history includes the graveyard of the Titanic, ground zero for the Halifax explosion, and a small oceanside park that landscapes away a history of racism in the erasure of Africville.

For the 2019 ICRF we will be featuring a keynote and panels on the special topic of Immigration and Indigeneity in religion and film. We hope to highlight films by Indigenous filmmakers, settler film makers or films dealing with points of conflict or congress at the intersections of religion and film. Submissions on these topics are strongly encouraged, but pa-pers on any topic related to religion and film will be considered.

Papers may explore the religious meaning or significance of individual films, provide a historical perspective on religion and film, examine methodologies for religion and film pedagogy, or analyze film genres in relation to religion. We encourage a discussion of films from around the world.

For the 2019 Conference St. Mary’s University is generously providing eight travel support vouchers worth $500 each (CDN). Graduate students and scholars travelling from outside North America will be given preference in a lottery for the vouchers. Please indicate your interest in being considered for a voucher with your submission on the identifying information page.

Proposal Submissions: Proposals should be sent to Dr. Kristian Petersen kristianpetersen20@mac.com with the subject-line “Religion & Film 2019 Proposal”. The deadline for submissions is March 15th 2019. For additional information please contact the conference coordinator at hfxicrf2019@gmail.com or syedadnan.hussain@smu.ca.
