Panel on “Women, Religion, and Examples of Progress and/or Obstacles” — South and South-east Asian Association for the Study of Culture and Religion (SSEASR), IAHR 2017

The South and South-east Asian Association for the Study of Culture and Religion (SSEASR) will be holding its 7th biannual meeting in connection with a regional meeting of the IAHR in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, July 9-12, 2017.
There will also be an optional tour of certain areas of the country after the conference for those who wish to participate.

Morny Joy’s panel proposal has been accepted by the local committee. Its title and topic matter are as follows:
Women, Religion, and Examples of Progress and/or Obstacles

Women, gender, and religion can be a potent mixture. It can have quite positive effects, as when religion aligns itself with justice and tolerance. At the same time, religion can still endorse restrictive policies and rules that limit women – who can come from diverse religious traditions, from their access to central aspects of religious activities on the basis of their supposed inferiority. The topic of gender itself is a highly debated. Some progress has occurred in the last thirty years, but there still remain certain major obstacles to be resolved.

This panel welcomes paper proposals from scholars who wish to reflect on their own research or experiences with such obstacles and issues. Please send an outline of a paper submissions to Morny by April 28 at: mjoy@ucalgary.ca

The full paper is due to be submitted by June 6th. Usually paper presentations are 15 minutes
