The prize recognizes students in the social sciences who incorporate visual analysis in their work. It is named for Rachel Dorothy Tanur (1958–2002), an urban planner and lawyer who cared deeply about people and their lives and was an acute observer of living conditions and human relationships. The prize is a twenty-year program of biannual grants from the Mark Family Fund, it is administrated by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and as in previous rounds (2008, 2010, 2012), the 2014 competition will be judged by members of ISA’s Visual Sociology Working Group (WG03) and prizes will be awarded at the group’s upcoming meeting at the ISA’s XVIII World Congress of Sociology, Facing an Unequal World: Challenges for Global Sociology, to be held in Yokohama, Japan in July 2014. Attendance at the Congress is not a requirement. The first prize will be $2,500 USD, the second $1,500, and the third $500.
