The Bible has long played a significant role in prairie poli- tics. Radio preachers, Bible teachers, and political leaders, all sought solutions to such issues as poverty, immigration, temperance, and resource development while making eschatological claims for being the land of the future. By Canada’s centennial, the coinciding of a resource boom, and the Bible informed politics of prairie premiers helped usher in the “New West,” just as it soon entered a period of secularization.

Brian Froese is Professor of History at Canadian Mennonite Uni- versity. His research focuses on Mennonites, Evangelicals, and political conservatism on the Canadian prairies.
