Deadline for Graduate fellowships: Monday, November 19, 2018

Who are we?

The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society (CSRS) is the leading centre in Canada for scholarly interdisciplinary research on topics at the intersection of religion and public life. Established in 1991, the centre hosts a vibrant community of interdisciplinary scholars, researchers, students, artists, and community members through its diverse fellowship programs. This community consists of academics and non-academics dedicated to the scholarly (and artistic) study of religion in relation to all aspects of human society; from law and politics to family and culture, to history, the sciences, and the arts. The CSRS holds no affiliation with any religion or religious agenda; its is equally interested in Eastern, Western, ancient, and contemporary religious studies. The centre is located in UVic’s Sedgewick Vandekerkhove (B) wing.

Graduate Fellowships

We accept up to five (5) graduate fellows per year; applications from all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome. Applicants should be working on projects that involve the scholarly study of religion in relation to any aspect of society and culture, contemporary and historical. Religion does not need to be the sole or central focus of their research, but it should be a significant consideration. The awards are intended for students who have completed course work and will be at the writing stage of their graduate thesis or dissertation during the period of their fellowship, but we will also consider students enrolled in one-year MA programs.

Although most recipients are UVic students, we may also award a fellowship to visiting graduate students whose projects fall within the centre’s research mandate as described above. We also have one graduate student fellowship that is specifically intended for students in the art history and visual studies field, so please encourage your students to apply. All graduate students apply using the graduate fellowship application form attached.

Each Graduate fellowship is valued at $5,000-6,000 and includes a private office space in the CSRS Sedgewick building office at UVic. Fellows will also have access to a mailbox located in the CSRS, fax, scanner and photocopier services, and opportunities to participate in CSRS social and academic activities.
